Authorities in Canada are trying to determine why a yearling black bear killed a woman from Minnesota. According to the Star Tribune, it happened a mere quarter mile north of the U.S.-Canada border approximately 10 miles northeast of International Falls, Minnesota.
Catherine Sweatt-Mueller was attending a family reunion on Red Pine Island. She heard her two dogs barking outside her cabin and went to investigate but did not return. Authorities found her dead with the bear standing over her. They immediately shot and killed it.
“Attacks of this nature are extremely rare, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim,” Maimoona Dinani, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson told the Associated Press.
