Below is a brief synopsis of some noteworthy happenings over just the last couple of months.
Elk Mountain, Idaho
- National priority project improved public access to 13,000 acres of public land in southcentral Idaho
Steptoe Wildlife Management Area, Nevada
- Conserved and opened public access to 7,157 acres of eastern Nevada habitat
- RMEF notified members who sent more than 5,000 messages to U.S. House representatives that passed legislation to vastly improve active forest management
- Trying to get the Senate to follow suit – take action here
- Worked with a landowner and partners to conserve, open access to and add 1,322 acres to the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area in the Southern Appalachians
- Protected 6,987 acres of elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, grouse and other wildlife and riparian habitat in southwest Wyoming (see above photo)
- Supplied funding for a six-year effort mapping more than 200 big game migration corridors in the West
Fighting Wyoming Invasive Weeds
- RMEF and partners distributed an op-ed to Wyoming media advocating for legislative support to fight the spread of invasive grasses
Supporting Montana Elk Research
- Supplied funding for ongoing research in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and western Montana to better understand elk population dynamics that will help guide wildlife management
Anti-Poaching Outreach
- Spread the word about elk poaching incidents in Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah and Washington
